Physics-based shape deformations for medical image analysis

چکیده
Powerful, flexible shape models of anatomical structures are required for robust, automatic analysis of medical images. In this paper we investigate a physics-based shape representation and deformation method in an effort to meet these requirements. Using a medial-based springmass mesh model, shape deformations are produced via the application of external forces or internal spring actuation. The range of deformations includes bulging, stretching, bending, and tapering at different locations, scales, and amplitudes. Springs are actuated either by applying deformation operators or by activating statistical modes of variation obtained via a hierarchical regional principal component analysis. We demonstrate results on both synthetic data and on a spring-mass model of the corpus callosum, obtained from 2D mid-sagittal brain MRI slices.

Surface reconstruction of detect contours for medical image registration purpose
Although, most of the abnormal structures of human brain do not alter the shape of outer envelope of brain (surface), some abnormalities can deform the surface extensively. However, this may be a major problem in a surface-based registration technique, since two nearly identical surfaces are required for surface fitting process. A type of verification known as the circularity check for th...
متن کاملPhysics-Based Deformable Organisms for Medical Image Analysis
Previously, “Deformable organisms” were introduced as a novel paradigm for medical image analysis that uses artificial life modelling concepts. Deformable organisms were designed to complement the classical bottomup deformable models methodologies (geometrical and physical layers), with top-down intelligent deformation control mechanisms (behavioral and cognitive layers). However, a true physic...
متن کاملDeformable Modeling for Characterizing Biomedical Shape Changes
We present a new algorithm for modeling and characterizing shape changes in 3D image sequences of biomedical structures. Our algorithm tracks the shape changes of the objects depicted in the image sequence using an active surface algorithm. To characterize the deformations of the surrounding and inner volume of the object’s surfaces, we use a physics-based model of the objects the image represe...
